I've had several careers. I started as a dentist in southwest Colorado. I came to Chicago for graduate school and obtained my Ph.D in psychology. I've worked in a hospital as a psychologist, and seen patients in private practice. Eventually I returned to dentistry as a teacher and researcher. I taught psychology, statistics, ethics and research methods in three dental schools in the Chicago area. I am now retired.
I started painting at the age of 55. I have taken a few art classes, and I've been mentored by Suellen Rocca, Eleanor Spiess-Ferris, and Linda Boardman.
Family Matters: I grew up in Iowa. My mother contracted polio as a young woman, and walked with a leg brace. My father was a college professor, and was able to get summers free. We spent months on long camping trips, where I learned to love and fear nature. I am the oldest of three children. Our parents gave us a great deal of freedom. This was both a gift and a burden, because as the oldest I also felt responsible for the safety of my siblings, which I think shows in these images.
While I Was Sleeping: These paintings almost all come from dream images. They can mean different things to different people. Sometimes the images are threatening, and sometimes they are just funny! They come from my unconscious working on life problems.
Domestic Dangers: Like nature itself, relationships are refuges of safety and sources of danger.
The Precocious Child: This most recent series was inspired by birdwatching on the Texas gulf (home to alligators), and by my great niece (reminding me of my childhood).
